Located on Kanahooka Point, Dapto, on the western shores of Lake Illawarra, just 1.5 hours drive from Sydney, Koonawarra Bay Sailing Club is an excellent venue for your next regatta. If you don't sail, the clubhouse is also a great venue for functions.
Formed in 1956 by a handful of keen local sailors, the club has seen large fleets and a variety of classes in those 50+ years. The clubhouse itself has seen some changes over that time. Soon after the club was formed, a concrete boatshed was built. Some years later, an A-frae was added to the top to allow for a kitchen and small hall. Unfortunately the top half of the clubhouse burnt down in 1999. It wasn't until late 2004 that we built a new clubhouse, once again on top of the existing boatshed, but utilising more of the available space, giving us a larger hall, kitchen and upstairs restrooms. This couldn't have been done without the assistance of a grant from the Department of Sport and Recreation, BlueScope Steel, and many of the members who gave their time to help build it.
As the lake has a small entrance to the ocean, we don't get any swell, and it is large enough that racing can be run over full size course withough interference. We have plenty of rigging area, and easy access to then water and course area. The clubhouse is positioned in a way that allows full viewing of the racing area.
